The Maven Knight: Ones of Aster (book 2 in The Maven Knight Chronicles) by Matthew Romeo, eBook, 593 pages
Synopsis from Goodreads: There's always two sides to every story. After escaping the Nanite storm within the Marün Canyons, Sarina, the lost heiress of Z’hart, continues into the dangerous Outlands with her companions. Seeking the final beacon to lead them to Providence, the group proceeds into the land of Asi in a desperate attempt to find the mythical fortress. With the Remnant Order sowing seeds of chaos and the Nanite storms threatening to consume the world, Sarina makes a bold decision so that they might complete their quest to save the world.
Tálir's journey as a Maven Knight takes a drastic turn as he finds himself in the clutches of the Remnant. Surrounded by his sworn enemies, he must tread cautiously while learning of the nuanced complexities that surround the ancient order. New allies, old enemies, and many revelations await him on this path.
In Z’hart City, Lady Sahari navigates the harrowing political system while secretly trying to uncover the mysteries Sarina left her with. With the help of her consort, Sahari searches for Centum’s spy in her midst so that she might prevent any hints of treachery from the Remnant. Though she lacks the experience for this role, she must play her part as Z’hart’s regent carefully in order to bring peace to her nation. Yet, not all things are as simple as they appear to be.
BOOK REVIEW: Holy moly that was a wild ride! First I have to say that I am glad that I'm reading the relaunch of this series and here's why. My first introduction to this series was the prequel that was released several years AFTER this series was published originally. That gave me background and knowledge that has lent itself more to anticipating when some things will be reveals and being excited when they are verses being completely shocked. However, those are still shocking moments (like the final word in Chapter 45...and that's all I'm gonna say about that).
I actually like that we get a third POV in this book. We met Lady Sahari somewhat briefly in book 1 but we needed to see her story along with Sarina and Tálir's. It was definitely something that helped me understand some other stuff going on in the book but let me tell you what...you have to read this because the author gives us some jaw dropping action and twists that are amazing!
Obviously it's a 5 star right?! Right! The author has expanded his world and given us more characters. We love characters. We hate characters. Some our feelings change regarding them throughout. His story telling and descriptions are also what keep me coming back to this series and needing to finish it! I know I could read book 3 right now if I wanted to because it's been published but I've only read the 2nd version of books 1 and now 2 so I want to wait for book 3's relaunch. If you've read the prequel and book 1, the link above takes you to Amazon to purchase (taken from the author's website). If you want to purchase books directly from the author (like signed copies), you can reach out to him on social media (this is his IG account but his linktree has his others listed). You can follow the author's Kick Starter account to be notified when he launches his book 3 campaign.
