Armored figure with glowing green energy in hand stands in a stormy, dark landscape. Author's name across the top and the title at the bottom.

The Maven Knight (book 1 in The Maven Knight Chronicles) by Matthew Romeo, eBook, 398 pages

Synopsis from GoodReads: Secrets have a cost in the world of magic and mystery. Tálir: a scavenger from the desert with nothing to his name apart from a relic of the past. Sarina: a brewer from the city who becomes the target of an ancient Order. When their paths collide, one goal becomes apparent. They must save the world from the forces of chaos.

A thousand years ago, the Old World was destroyed by the Ending. The legendary Maven Knights of order were turned into legends. Now, an ancient malevolence seeks to bring destruction to the New World. Drawn into the conflict, the pair must unite with a band of misfits in an effort to stop the growing threats. Marauding Outlanders, Nanite storms, and countless other dangers await on this quest. But most of all, the mythic powers of the Maven Knights must be rediscovered.

BOOK REVIEW: Oh this author has done it again! We are sucked into the world of Pan'gea to this time follow Tálir as an adult! Just like in The Hold of Destiny (see related posts for review on the prequel to this book) we're getting dual POV. Tálir and Sarina are the narrators this time and it is so fascinating to see how these characters grow in their own ways. The author does a great job with the narrative that is easy to follow and easy to get caught up in, even when it's the language he made up for this world.

I think something that a lot of people can agree on is when we are able to follow and see change in all the characters. Yes our two main narrators are Tálir and Sarina but we also see how the others that they are interacting with grow and evolve throughout the story. We start out with Devin, Vyck, Aida, Remus, and Vivían all being held prisoner with these two narrators and by the cliff hanger of an ending we see how they have gone from total strangers to working together against the enemy.

This was definitely a 5 star for me. I love seeing the author's world building grow and evolve. We get to experience more of the world and see more of it on the quest that the characters embark on in this book. The way he describes the landscapes, the smells, the surroundings, the people, it definitely helps me visualize this so much more. I also really love that I listened to The Hold of Destiny earlier this year and was able to pronounce a lot of the names of places and characters. I am definitely invested in this world, this quest, and these characters and I really hope that book 2 picks up where the cliff hanger in book 1 left off because I have questions that I need answers to.

5/5 Stars
