Greenteeth¹ by Molly O'Neill, eBook, 304 pages
Synopsis from GoodReads: Beneath the still surface of a lake lurks a monster with needle sharp teeth. Hungry and ready to pounce. Jenny Greenteeth has never spoken to a human before, but when a witch is thrown into her lake, something makes Jenny decide she's worth saving. Temperance doesn't know why her village has suddenly turned against her, only that it has something to do with the malevolent new pastor. Though they have nothing in common, these two must band together on a magical quest to defeat the evil that threatens Jenny's lake and Temperance's family, as well as the very soul of Britain.
BOOK REVIEW: This book has such a feeling of nostalgia about it but I can't quite figure out why. Maybe it is because you have the witch and the lake monster being an unlikely match to be friends or even friendly. Maybe it is because they set off to find help to defeat the evil only to find that it is them who has to go on the epic quest. Maybe it's because we also have a goblin thrown into the mix and a dog. I know...it all sounds so strange...but that's why I loved it so much!
This all had a very mystical and magical feel the whole way through. I mean there was even talk about dragons at one point which...ugh...they're my favorite of all the magical, mystical creatures! I feel like I'm getting more familiar with the fantasy language too because Temperance, Jenny, and Brackus all go to the High Fae which is like royalty right? But like I understood it instead of having to guess...unless I'm way off in which case I'm still learning!
The only reason this is a 4.5 instead of a full 5 stars is because it started off slow for me. It took several reading sessions to finally break over 30% read for me to finally start getting into the story. It almost feels like when Dorothy, Tinman, Scarecrow, and Lion seek help from the Wizard but mixed with the quests that Alice has to go through in the books Adventures in Wonderland. You have adventure, quests, a very bad guy, and the most unlikely band of characters that have to work together to conquer evil! What's not to love! Also, this is the debut novel for this author and I think she knocked it out of the park.
