Almond Joy Shake

Updated: Dec 10, 2022

I had difficulty calling this a shake because the way I made this, it was thinner than I would usually associate with a shake...but I also interchange shake with smoothie so...anyway, here's a delicious recipe but be sure to read all my notes at the end. This is made will all UNSWEETENED ingredients. I liked it but not everyone will so read the notes!

NOTES

  • As stated, I used all unsweetened ingredients. This was not a sweet shake and it was actually borderline too unsweetened for me. Here are a couple of things you can change or add so it is a little sweet:

    • Use a different coconut yogurt. So Delicious Coconut yogurt was labeled unsweetened. I don't know if they have a sweetened one but you can use a sweetened coconut yogurt.

    • Use a sweetened almond milk or even a vanilla almond milk.

    • You can ditch the cocoa powder and add in your favorite chocolate protein powder.

    • Make sure that your banana was on the ripe side...like the banana peel has some good brown spots but not quite banana bread level ripe.

    • Add some drops of liquid stevia. I found this in our health food aisle, not the baking aisle.

  • To make this a little thicker will take a little more prep time. You can portion out your yogurt and freeze it or try adding a little ice. Some protein powders can also help thicken.

  • What I didn't mention is that this recipe is 100% vegan as it is written. If you change the yogurt, use a whey protein, top with regular whip cream, or change the milk to a cow's milk then it won't be vegan. If that isn't what drew you to this recipe then change to what you like!

  • Lastly, most smoothie or shake recipes I make, I let you pick your yogurt and your milk and give you free reign. When I give specifics like I do here, it is to create a specific flavor. Almond Joy's are sweet chocolate covered sticky coconut with an almond pressed into the coconut. For me, this combo of extracts had to be adjusted. I didn't actually get much of an almond flavor. I held back because almond extract is very potent and, like with all extracts, you can always add more but you can't take away!

As always, if you make this recipe, please let me know how you like it in the comments below. I would love to know what yogurt you used and if you added protein powder! If you share it on social media, please tag me @Myranda.McCaffreyNowak on IG, FB and TikTok!
