Split by Sarah McKnight, eBook, 297 pages Synopsis from GoodReads: As a recently separated mother of two, Holly Doyle wants nothing more than to give her kids a sense of normalcy. After finding the perfect house to rent, Holly can rest easy knowing a fresh start is on the horizon for her family. But something isn’t quite right with the old house. The basement door never seems to stay closed. The family cat reacts to things that aren’t there. And, in the center of it all, Holly’s young son is acting…different.
The longer Holly and her children stay in the home, the more a dark mystery snuffs out the light. Can Holly unravel the sinister secret a century in the making, or will her son suffer the same fate as those who came before? Holly only knows one thing for she will do anything to protect her children.
BOOK REVIEW: I cannot tell you how much I enjoy reading this author's thrillers. She does such a great job getting you hooked right at the beginning and keeping you hooked until you've finished. When I tell you that I rearranged my workout schedule because I didn't want to stop reading this book, I am not kidding! I thought...oh it's only a 26 minute run and then you'll be back...nope! Run will take place tomorrow morning instead!
It's hard for me to figure out a favorite part. There was definitely something spooky and nostalgic about this story that I just couldn't put my finger on. Even telling my mom about the creepy basement door she said that she was out and would never! It wasn't until a character said something that it all clicked and I'm grateful for my weird fascination with supernatural movies and tv shows that helped me along but it did take a minute for me but not nearly as long as it did for Holly. Like all things though, hindsight is 20/20 and living in this story would definitely not give her the opportunity to put 2 and 2 together like we, the readers, can.
Fast 5 star for me. The writing is wonderful. The author is an amazing story teller and not just her thrillers (I'll link a couple of reviews I've written on other books by this author). The story gave me chills, had me shifting around in my seat, and wanting to go into full on superhero protective mode just as Holly did. As a mother, I cannot even imagine the horror of watching this happen to your child. I definitely recommend this, run and get it now! This book was just released on 8.2.25 and is currently in the KU library! If you read it, let me know what you think!
